The draw for the post positions for the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby was held at 5pm today in the Secretariat Lounge at Churchill Downs. The event was attended by the trainers, jockeys, owners, numerous media personnel, and other guests including some UofL Equine Program students. I was one of those UofL students and thoroughly enjoyed being at the Derby post draw in person. The post positions for each horse are decided by drawing a stone out of a bottle then matching that numbered stone with a randomly selected horse.
The actual process of the draw took awhile as it would be paused for commercial breaks. But the actual process was very interesting to see the traditional process for drawing post positions. I was standing next to other UofL students who wanted Hansen to get a good position. As the draw progressed they were worrying that he would draw the number one position, which can be a hard position to break well from. Hansen was actually the last pick and barely missed the one post position that was filled just before him.
After the draw was completed, those affiliated with the horses stayed for a group picture and some interviews. I was waiting around just enjoying the atmosphere and had the opportunity to briefly meet some prominent figures in Thoroughbred racing.
The final post positions will be:
- Daddy Long Legs
- Optimizer
- Take Charge Indy
- Union Rags
- Dullahan
- Bodemeister
- Rousing Sermon
- Creative Cause
- Trinniberg
- Daddy Knows Best
- Alpha
- Prospective
- Went The Day Well
- Hansen
- Gemologist
- El Padrino
- Done Talking
- Sabercat
- I’ll Have Another
- Liaison
Also eligible is My Adonis who will run if another contender is scratched before 9am on Friday when betting on the Derby will begin.
One of these horses will win the 138th Kentucky Derby this Saturday.
