More than a Simon and Garfunkel song, Scarborough Fair is a yearly renaissance festival held in Waxahachie, Texas. The Fair takes place every weekend, Saturdays and Sundays, from the beginning of April through Memorial Day. Scarborough Fair caters to all your festival desires from shopping, to fun food, to entertaining shows as well as offering a great experience for traditional renaissance lovers, the fantasy enthusiasts, to just the everyday wanderer. Everyone is welcomed even if you don’t dress up in costume, but it tends to be more fun and the performers will interact with you more if you go in garb.
A day at the Fair begins with the firing of a cannon over the waiting crowd of assorted pirates, ladies, fairies, poets, and 21st century time travelers. For some it is like returning home while it is a grand experience for new visitors. There’s an atmosphere of entertainment made up by the art sculptures, exciting performers ranging from turtle racing to full jousting, and the engaging people who work at Scarborough Fair for a living or just for fun.
Everyone is welcome to the Fair, from the traditional Lords and Ladies to dark fairies, demons, and even the less creative people who don’t come in costume.
There are also performances for all age groups. Some performances are restricted to adults only as the content is not always fit for children, such as Cristophe the Insulter. Then there are shows targeted specifically for children (which adults normally enjoy as well) including Tobias the Adequate‘s magic show and Fool Harty. Then there are the shows that appeal to young and old alike. One such act was new this year and was one of my favorites, Adam Crack and his Fire Whip.
While it turns out to be a long day, it is well worth the venture back in time to visit Scarborough Fair. There is constantly something to see or do and numerous possibilities to join the fun yourself from interacting with costumed characters, to playing various games, or even volunteering to participate in a performance. And while the Fair may be over for this year, it will return next spring for another season of fun for all eager time travelers.
