The Honors Student Council at the University of Louisville holds a huge Book and Media Sale every two years. Nick-named BAMS, the event is made up entirely of donated items that are then sold by the Council to raise money for Kosair Children’s Hospital. When the event was held two years ago, the Council received around 20,000 items in donations. This year the goal was a total of 30,000 donations, and the Honors Student Council achieved this goal.
Stepping into the Red Barn on UofL’s campus this week, you will see just how much work has gone into the sale. Throughout the school year, Honors Student Council has been collecting donations from all over campus and the state, sorting the books, packing them for storage, bringing them out of storage for the sale, and setting them up in the Red Barn. Yesterday marked the beginning of the sale with Preview Night when buyers could pay ten dollars to get first crack at the items for sale. Items range from cassette tapes, dvds, cds, records, as well as the fiction and non-fiction books.
The sale was so big this year that not only was the entire Red Barn filled with tables of books and media, including the stage, but additional tables had to be set up outside to accommodate all of the items. The range of items means that everyone who visits is bound to find something. I myself spent thirty-five dollars and came home with nineteen books, one dvd, and one record.
The prices are extremely reasonable: One dollar for paperbacks, individual records, and cds. Two dollars for dvds and hardback books. Everything else is priced under two dollars, except for a few special items. The sale runs from today, April 4th, through Saturday, April 7th. There is no entry fee after the Preview Night. The sale is open from 9am to 7pm daily through Friday and is then open from 9am until 4pm on Saturday. For the last day of the sale, prices will be reduced so that the items can find good homes.
Not only can you find great books for low prices, you can help the Honors Student Council reach their goal of raising $10,000 for Kosair Children’s Hospital. As an added incentive, if you spend over $25, you will be entered in a drawing for a gift card from a local business. This is a really great event and lots of fun just to come out and peruse all the books and media while helping raise money for a great cause.
